Open Question: Places to live in Long Island?

I'm considering a position in Manhattan for ~100K, and need some advice on where to look for a place to rent. I'm looking for no more than a 40/45 min commute on the LIRR. We'd like to find a place with off street or covered parking, and also a decent school district as my wife is a teacher. We'd also like an area where we can walk to restaurants, shopping, etc. Also, I've been to Freeport, and it seemed nice, but we'd probably prefer something a little closer to NYC.
